Alquiber’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy, through the reforestation of a degraded area in this town in Castile and León, aims to achieve an estimated reduction inCO2 of nearly 600 metric tons per hectare, which amounts to offsetting a total of nearly 3,000 metric tons over a period of about 40 years
Thursday, November 25–. Alquiber’s commitment to the most environmentally focused aspect of its Corporate Social Responsibility policy is evident in a multitude of innovative and ambitious initiatives, including those aimed at reducing its environmental impact, such as the recently launched species reintroduction program in the town of Santa Cruz de Boedo (Palencia). As a complement to the ongoing modernization of its fleet—which is focused on achieving a drastic reduction in itscarbon footprint in the coming years—Alquiber has launched this pioneering reforestation initiative, through which it hopes to generate enough environmental benefits to offset its emissions and, furthermore, donate the surplus to its customers.
This initiative, promoted by Alquiber through an agreement with the Santa Cruz de Boedo City Council, involves planting more than 4,100 trees —ash trees, willows, white and black poplars, hackberry trees, Pyrenean oak and gall oak, hawthorns, cherry trees, stone pines, and black pines—in a former, degraded aggregate quarry, restoring the environment of this town in Castile and León, enhancing biodiversity in the area, and providing refuge for its wildlife.
To this end, the soil has been tilled and prepared to meet the plants’ needs. During their first three years of life—when they are most vulnerable—they will be protected through careful maintenance, which will even include replacing any plants affected by potential droughts or damage caused by native wildlife.
Through this initiative, which is expected to reduceCO2 emissions by nearly 600 metric tons per hectare, Alquiber hopes to offset a total of nearly 3,000 metric tons over a period of about 40 years—the timeframe established by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to achieve its environmental goals.
